New Generation PowerPC Processor Targeted at Board Obsolescence Management

Raleigh, NC, May 2013 Beyond Electronics, a technology leader providing rugged, real-time computing solutions to OEMs and system integrators, has introduced a high performance, low power consumption processor board specifically targeting obsolescence management and interface flexibility. The CPU-PPC460EX-VME (CPU460) processor board utilizes an AMCC PPC460E, 1 GHz, PowerPC processor that contains an extensive list of interfaces including: serial ports, SATA, USB, PCIe, dual Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, etc. To support various applications, the processor is supported by a selection of RAM, NAND Flash and NOR Flash memory options.

To reduce part obsolescence problems, many of the board’s external interfaces have been incorporated into an FPGA which is written in generic Verilog HDL. This allows the design to be retained even in the event that the FPGA becomes unavailable. The FPGA contains functions such as: a full featured VMEbus interface, 8 additional serial interfaces, a dual port memory interface, a watchdog timer, GPIO bits, a scatter/gather DMA engine, a software reprogram feature and an optional I/O co-processor.

The FPGA reprogram feature is a key component of the board since it allows a user to reprogram the FPGA through a simple software interface. By reprogramming the board the I/O can be customized to meet a project’s requirements. In addition to interface flexibility, having the ability to reprogram the FPGA enables field upgrades and maintenance with no requirement to return the product to the factory. Binary images can be distributed to upgrade board features to the latest revision.

The CPU460 currently supports VxWorks® and Linux® operating systems.
It is available in various environmental grades and has been fully qualified for military applications including: shock/vibration, altitude, pressure rate of change, temperature, temperature rate of change, noise injection, etc.

The new CPU460 is in service and is available immediately.
